River Oaks Elementary Odyssey Team Are World Champions

The Caplan team at World Finals
The Odyssey of the Mind Caplan team from River Oaks Elementary school have done Texas proud! They participated in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at the University of Maryland over the Memorial Day weekend (May 29 to June 2, 2004) and placed second in Fantastic Art, Division 1, beating 56 other teams from numerous other states as well as foreign countries like Hong Kong, Canada, and Singapore. In addition, they placed 18th out of 44 teams in Balancing Act, Division 1. It was a tremendous finish to a year of spectacular creativity and hours and hours of hard work. The team arrived home in Houston on Wednesday, June 2 to be greeted by a Channel 2 KPRC TV crew and were featured on the 10:00 p.m. Night Beat news that evening. At World Finals, both ROE teams joined more than 700 other teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 20 other countries e.g. Canada, China, Hong Kong, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Singapore and Uzbekistan for the competition. All in all, fifteen thousand people attended World Finals, including team members, volunteers, coaches, parents, educators and other supporters.
