Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, ROE Class of 1976, kicked off ROE's 75th Anniversary celebration weekend by spending April 1, 2004 with ROE students and speaking at a luncheon at Hotel Derek. Proceeds of the luncheon will benefit our library fund. Purchase 75th Anniversary Note Cards

ROE 75th anniversary commemorative note cards are now available for sale in the school office. They are $10 for a pack of 10 cards and envelopes. Each set contains ten different renditions of the school by ROE students. Use these cards to write thank yous, love notes and as gifts.

A Note from Our 75th Anniversary Chair

I had first stepped into River Oaks Elementary during the Vanguard application process in 1991 for my eldest daughter who is now a junior at Lamar.  I pause to reflect on how much time had passed, how much had changed at River Oaks and how much had remained the same. Last year, when we realized that our 75^th anniversary was approaching, we made plans to simply try to collect as many names of alumni as possible and create a great database for future use.  We planned to have a Saturday celebration with tours and a reception.

Those simple plans have mushroomed into a major effort to locate our older alumni and create an entire extended weekend of events, including the participation of Jeff Bezos, the first annual golf tournament, and the carnival with afternoon tours of the school.  There may even be a more glamorous alumni dinner if there is interest.  Alumni have been emailing me from all over the world with fond memories of teachers and wonderful stories about their school days. I have heard from over 200 alumni who finished before 1970. This volunteer job has prompted me to learn more about Houston’s history and the families who first entered the brand new school in 1928. Ima Hogg picked the first principal and was instrumental in creating a school that was set apart.   Please join me this year in continuing this legacy for our children by participating in the planning and the celebrating of this wonderful school’s anniversary.
